Maps
Maps have been around since men dreamed of venturing into unexplored territories. The first cartography or map-making focused on the positions and movements of stars and planets. As man's adventurous spirit took him to faraway earthbound places, accurate maps and charts meant the safety and success of a journey and provided new information about the world at large. Earth maps started out flat because everyone thought the earth was flat. When scientists realized the earth was round, globes and Mercator maps came into being. Today, maps are not only useful for travel, charts, graphs, and maps of all kinds are popular decorating elements for homes, offices and dorms.
Science
Science is a world of charts and maps and numbers and hypotheses. For the average human being, it's dry information at best. But the images of science are another matter.
In the late 1400s, Leonardo da Vinci--who is considered to have been a genius--was fascinated with science and created exquisite paintings of Vitruvian Man and Universal Man. He also sketched his inventions, like the Giant Catapult and the Flying Machine. These imaginative images are available today in prints and posters.
